{Almost Birthday!}: Chevron Nails, Waffles, and a CrossFit Update.

by Katelyn Block on July 29, 2012 · 17 comments

Guess what? IT’S MY ALMOST BIRTHDAY!!!

And my sister painted my nails. Chevron. Awesome.

Ugh, I love birthdays. I love celebrations. I love reasons to eat and celebrate. I love reasons to be loud.

As if I need a reason.

You’re probably reading this and going, wait, why am I here again? I thought this blog was all about eating clean and sweating dirty? And eating?

Don’t worry you guys, I ate today. I just don’t have any recipes for you. Yet. It’s my (almost) birthday and I’ll talk about nonsense if I want to.

Thanks to Starbucks, I enjoyed the most awesome ever Skinny Mocha Latte with soy. No sweetener needed. Hi, hello, most magical thing I have ever tasted. It had froth on it. FROTH. There is something so awesome about fluffy, whipped, delicious goodness that is just so… good. I keep trying to avoid using the word froth. There I go again. Froth froth froth.

They love me apparently and sent me two (TWO) cards for free drinks. One because I buy too much Starbucks (Sweet 15, y’all), and the second because it’s my birthday. Did I mention it’s my birthday tomorrow?

The Pretty Princess with the Prissy Paws thinks it’s her birthday. She’s wrong. Bake me a cake, little one.

I still don’t know what kind of cake I’m going to make. (that rhymes)

It’s definitely going to involve chocolate, and it’s definitely going to be “healthy”. I use quotation marks because a dessert can only be so healthy until you decide that it needs a little sumthin’ sumthin’.

Many of you are going to ask, so I’m going to answer: Yes, it’s going to be mostly paleo, and yes, it is going to be completely delicious. It will also be mostly vegan. There will be eggs, but those of you who are veggie-conscious will also be able to enjoy it with the substitution of chia or flax eggs.

Cake for all!

YUM YUM

I also had a waffle yesterday.

On my way out of Syracuse, hello, I had to stop at Funk’n Waffles. What kind of waffle-lover would I be if I ignored this opportunity that was staring me in the face? The stupid kind. So duh. Waffles.

I got the Buckwheat waffle with chocolate chips, blueberries, and peanut butter. Topped it with maple syrup, iced coffee on the side. Did you know that everything is better with chocolate and peanut butter on top? It’s true. Whoever thought of this combination late in their bed one night deserves all of my life savings. Bowing down to you.

See? I don’t always eat healthy. The truth is, life is boring without indulgence. The guide (not rule) I use for myself is eating real, whole foods on weekdays (mostly paleo), and eating whatever I want on weekends, within reason. Eating tasty, unhealthy foods all weekend is not only exhausting, but makes me feel gross. So I balance it out with good stuff. Like: Green juice, salads, omelettes.

I also don’t restrict myself from (mostly) healthy desserts. Like Yasso!

These popsicles are great, and at only 70 calories, boast a whopping 7 grams of protein. Yes, they’re dairy, and yes, they have sugar in them, but dudes — talk about a great way to satisfy a sweet and creamy craving with something protein-packed. I like these. You could also make your own by pouring Chobani into popsicle molds with sticks and freeze them. Ka-pow!

So that’s something I’d like to remind you all of, is that I am all about Eating Clean and Sweating Dirty, but I am also about indulgence and letting yourself live. It’s all about moderation.

CrossFit Update:

This morning I woke up for a 9am WOD, and was not expecting to run. I think I keep forgetting that exercise is also about cardio training, and endurance. We did a running relay with a partner. The ladder looked like this:

  • 200 m
  • 400 m
  • 800 m
  • 800 m
  • 400 m
  • 200 m

Each partner does an entire set. One partner runs, the other rests. Switch and repeat.

I was literally dead by the end of this, dripping in sweat and it was awesome. I can say it a thousand times, but the truth is, I love CrossFit because of the teamwork and comraderie. We’re all getting our butts kicked at the same time, and it’s amazing that we all push each other so hard and want to see each other succeed. Not because of a lack of competition (there is plenty of that), but because we’re having fun. Exercise should be fun. Duh. Otherwise, I would give up and watch the Food Network all day.

Cheering on the athletes around me is an awesome feeling. Mid-run high fives and cheers that turn into all-out grunts. It’s so great.

Another thing: I recently purchased the myWOD app for my iPhone, which was $1.99. I’m not sure yet how super worth-it the app is, but so far I love it. I also love the fact that it’s paperless and tracks your progress (PR’s, graphs, etc.). I’m excited to see how it helps my WOD tracking and personal record-keeping.

Do you use any apps to track your fitness progress?
How do you indulge on the weekends?
Did you watch Forrest Gump on Lifetime last night? Because I did. SUCH a party animal.

Just wait till you do that running WOD but with rowing! I’ve done that before..with a team of like 3. You start with 100m and go up 100m until you get to 500m. Like I row 100m my partner does, then the 3rd team member..then I row 200m, partner, third and so on until 500. THEN YOU GO BACK DOWN THE EFFING LADDER. So good. So hard. But then again I have an extreme love/hate relationship with the erg. I hate it..but it gives me a kick ass workout every time. Plus I just suck at rowing..so that adds on to my hate for it haha. But it’s always a good one. Wish I could be back at the gym! I miss everyone SO MUCH you have no idea. Give a shout out for me next time your there. Tell them Ariel says hi and that I really am starting to miss CrossFit a ton! (I’ve been marathon training..so strength has gone pretty much down the shitter for me) But I’m working on incorporating more CrossFit every week. I’m gonna find a box in Columbus close by to get my muscles back while keeping up my marathon training!

Woooo..sorry for the long comment haha.

Love the nails!!! Happy early birthday! You will love being able to track your WOD’s! It comes in super handy when you are able to look back on repeat workouts or for keeping track of weights and benchmarks! I’m sure you’ll be setting all kinds of PR’s very soon too!

I love love love the mywod app. i use it everyday, plus you can also add your own work outs and there is also a timer on it so if you do a work out on your own you can use it, for intervals, basic or tabata. i usually do not use the timer but i did the other day for the first time and it was awesome. definatly worth the money.

the crossfit running work outs are always horrible.. at my gym, we just run around the building so it sucks because 2 times around =400. but being with everyone at the gym, everyone is not just cheering their partner on but everyone else as well. my gym isnt open on sundays, which is good, because i can take a brake when i need it but i do still wish there was an option!

my boyfriend now hates when i bake because i try to make everything healthy – i remember telling my mom to just make the food normal instead of changing things up when i was little and now i am doing the same thing. :)

i really want to make some waffles or pancakes. we usually make eggs here when we have time but i keep seeing protein pancakes and paleo pancakes and am CRAVING THEM.

The So Delicious mini fudge bars are 50 calories apiece (only 1g of protein per serving, but still…) – super tasty and just the right size for a post-work dessert before I collapse into bed :)

Holy delicious waffle Batman! That combo sounds soooo good! I used to workout at a Crossfit gym and I always loved the team feel the workouts had…and it always helps to have someone encouraging you who’s also drenched in sweat right along with you! :)

I used to use Daily Mile to track my workouts and runs, but when I started using My Fitness Pal a little over a month ago, there is a category to track your fitness so I stopped DM since it became just one more thing to log. I really like having something to keep track of my workouts (times, mileage, weights) and I like that I can always go back and look at things to see where I’m improving.

I never really feel like I restrict myself from indulgences during the week, but most of the time I’m so busy with work and everything else that I usually end up eating pretty clean and then when I have more time/out with friends on the weekends, I tend to treat myself more. But I don’t go balls to the wall or anything…like you said, eating like crap all weekend long makes me feel awful!

Happy birthday/birthday week! You always have to celebrate the whole week!
Indulges are definitely necessary some of the time. Its no fun if you restrict 24/7, its all about healthy moderation. I like your eat clean approach!
P.S. I LOVE your keyboard cover! How adorable is that?! I need one.

Ms. Block,

First, Happy Belated Birthday!

Second, awesome website!

Last but not least… Well, maybe less important than “Happy Belated Birthday!”…
Reasoning behind this comment:
After submitting a completely random/embarrassing Google Images request,
I stumbled upon your site.
The image link that actually got me here was that of your dog.
Do you know what kind she is? She is not from KY (approx. 2 years, 7-8 months old), is she?
A whippet mix? I, honestly, have not idea what kind of canine I have.
Hate to come off as awkwardly odd, but my girl is identical to yours!
I’m talking same ears, markings, paw-crossing lounge position, eyes, head turn hold, feet shape, build, same, same, same. If your pup is truly a ‘princess’, the deal is sealed. We have sisters on our hands! Thought my Jacki was one-of-a-kind, which she is and always will be the most awesome dog on the planet… BUT, visually, you just wrecked my impression of her uniqueness! ;)

While you ponder this coincidence, I also use the same basic diet scheme as yourself: Eat healthy throughout the week and indulge on weekends. Only difference with me is the whole “within reason” component. Changing that up, though, so I don’t feel like I have been hit by a short bus on Monday mornings. From my recent change to a primarily vegan diet – with the exception of eggs, some turkey, and yasso – to waffle choice; we have a lot in common.

However, we are of opposite sex which is probably why I find that the Skinny Vanilla Latte with soy, no sweetener, reigns supreme. Also, unlike [pretty] girls, lumberjack men never get free drinks – even by mail. This applies to all kinds of drinks. Could be partially attributable to recycling the mailbox stand as a fence post in Blue’s pasture.

Would you suggest CrossFit over P90X? Only familiar with interval training, biking, and swimming – all revolving around personally customized regimens… Anyways, sorry for the novel. Just surprised by all the said coinky-dinks.

Have a great Labor Day weekend!

- Joey
