En Route to NYC: Learning and The Importance of Self-Preservation

by Katelyn Block on January 31, 2013 · 16 comments

So, I am currently on my way to New York City and I’m not going to tell you why. Hopefully in a few weeks I can tell you what’s a’ happenin, but for now it’s going to be mysterious.

There are so many things I’m grateful for. My family, mostly. I’m so blessed and notice it a lot more lately. For a wonderful family, a roof over my head, and food to eat. Simple things that, in the past, I’ve overlooked and forgotten about. I told my Dad a couple of months ago how blessed I feel, and it has stuck with him ever since.

Not only for the tangible things, but for love and friendships. For life and inspiration. For curiosity and for lack of fear. There are so many things I don’t know, and it’s fun to look at that as an opportunity to explore. To learn more and become a better daughter, friend, co-worker, and person. I think that’s why so many good things have happened in the last few years – believing in things that others say you can’t do, and proving them wrong. Knowing that you can, and doing it.

I write a lot of things on here because I’m a chatterbox. But also, because I’m constantly learning. And I love writing about things that I don’t know much about, because I can learn from all of you. I’m never going to pretend to be better, smarter, or having more expertise than the next person (and if I do, please politely correct me), but I will make a point to talk about things that are interesting. That deserve attention and discussion. And I’ll probe your brain, because I like doing that.

So, today’s ramble is about being transparent and true. Seeing everything as opportunity, rather than a deficit. Taking the time out of the day to read, explore, talk, and learn. Being true to what you love and why you love it.

Am I being cryptic? I do that a lot.

One thing I’ve learned lately is that you can want to dedicate hours and hours to something, be awake from 5am to 11pm, and work that entire time. That’s fine. I’ve done it. But remember to sit back; breathe. Pamper yourself. Have a cup of tea before bed. Drink less coffee. Eat more vegetables. Sleep better. Phone a friend. You will be happier and a better family member, friend, partner, employee. Because who doesn’t want to be happy?

I am about to arrive in New York City and I’m way excited. I’m seeing some incredible people today and I’m hoping that I can keep you all posted on Twitter and Instagram. Dang. I love New York. Did you know that I was seeing flash flood warnings this morning and now it’s sunny? THANK YOU, Mother Nature, you are too kind.

It sounds like you’re doing big things with your life and something tells me that’s what this NYC trip is more! I agree- I learn so much from the blog world. It’s impossible to know everything yourself, but with so many people with so many different background, it’s amazing what you can learn and grow from. Have a great time! I’m looking forward to following your trip!

Can’t wait to hear about your trip. I love NYC and really, I love (most) cities! Life is one big opportunity to keep learning and growing and we have to take care of ourselves (mentally and physically) so we can keep that up!
